1. What Is an IP Rating?
When choosing lighting for different environments, especially where moisture or dust is involved, understanding IP ratings is essential. But what exactly does an IP rating mean, and how do you choose the right one?
IP stands for Ingress Protection, and it’s defined by the international standard IEC 60529. It’s a two-digit code that tells you how well a product is protected against solid objects (like dust) and liquids (like water). You’ve likely seen IP ratings on light fitting packaging — for example, IP65, IP44, or IP20.
The graphic below breaks it down clearly:

2. How to Choose the Right IP Rating for Your Application?
Choosing the correct IP rating depends on where and how the lighting will be used. Here’s a quick guide:
IP44 and IP65 rated fittings can be used both indoors and outdoors. However, any rating below IP44 is suitable for indoor use only.
For Indoor:
Dry spaces (e.g. offices, classrooms): IP20 is usually sufficient for areas with minimal exposure to water or dust.
For Bathrooms:
IP ratings are a bit complicated in bathrooms, where lights are exposed to varying levels of water and steam. While IP44 is the general minimum for bathroom lighting, have specific requirements to ensure safety and compliance
Outdoor lighting:
IP65 or higher is ideal to withstand rain, dust, and varying weather conditions.
Bathroom Zones
Zone 0:
Inside the bath or shower.
Requires IP67 or higher and must be low voltage (max 12V) to withstand complete immersion.
Zone 1:
The area directly above the bath or shower, up to 2.25m from the floor.
Minimum rating is IP44, but IP65 is often recommended for stronger water resistance.
Zone 2:
Extends 60cm horizontally beyond the bath or shower, and up to 2.25m vertically. This also includes the 60cm area around a washbasin. Lighting in this zone should be IP44 or higher.
Outside Zones:
Any area outside Zones 0, 1, and 2, where water is unlikely to reach. IP20 or above is generally acceptable in these dry areas.
